Rehabilitation of the Main Street Bridge (NYS119) over Bronx River Parkway and Bronx River

HVEA provided preliminary and detailed design and construction support and inspection services for the Rehabilitation of the Main Street Bridge in White Plains for the WCDPW&T. The original structure was built in 1922 and consists of two spans: 63’ long by 100’ wide and 60’ long and 72’ wide. This rehabilitation project extended the service life of the existing structure by removing the existing wearing surface and saturated fill material, repairing damage done by intruding water, waterproofing the arches, placing new fill, upgrading drainage, restoring the wearing surface and repairing the concrete and stone masonry. The existing parapet walls were also raised to a height of 42” to comply with ADA/PROWAG requirements.

As this bridge is in the Bronx River Reservation and is National Register Eligible, extensive coordination with SHPO was needed to meet Section 106 and 4(f) requirements.

This bridge is a major entrance point to the City of White Plains, with upwards of 44,000 vehicles per day. M&PT was a critical component of the project and required a detailed phasing plan during construction to both maintain traffic and perform the work efficiently.
