Design-Build Services For Hunts Point Interstate Access Improvement Project (D900047)

HVEA Engineers provided Material Testing support for this Design-Build project to improve access to the Hunts Point Peninsula. Located in the South Bronx, the Hunts Point Peninsula houses the Hunts Point Food Distribution Center as well as many industrial, commercial and residential properties resulting in heavy commercial vehicle usage. Contract 1 set the stage by removing truck traffic on local roads and by providing improved access between the Hunts Point Peninsula, Sheridan Boulevard and the Bruckner Expressway while also addressing structural, geometric and operational deficiencies within the project limits.

HVEA was the independent materials testing firm on this project. This project reconfigured and improved several roadways to improve access for the 78,000 vehicles that travel to and from the Hunts Point Peninsula each day while delivering infrastructure upgrades to surrounding roads, ramps and bridges. This project replaced a pedestrian bridge and built a new shared-use path for pedestrians and bicyclists. This, together with the new access routes for commercial vehicles, improved safety for local motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists.

Work spanned days, nights, weekends and holidays; HVEA consistently supported the demanding schedule and provided on-site and off-site inspections. Our testing technicians were well versed with NYSDOT specifications and provided an array of field and lab tests as well as specialty inspections including bolting and welding.
